Why Do We Rewatch The Same Shows Again And Again: Psychology Explained!

Do you also feel like watching the same show again and again, are there some shows that constantly make you feel the 'pull', well you're most certainly not alone. Life is always about cashing one thing after the another, not only are we packed with tight schedules, we also want to fit too much into too little. And that's where life becomes stressful, after constantly chasing one thing after the other.

The question for this discussion is that have you ever scrolled Instagram thinking about watching different shows and after spending quite some time you find yourself rewatching your comfort shows and movies that you've probably watched a couple of times before?

This is probably why some programmes are referred to as 'comfort shows'. From reducing stress to fulfilling our need to experience that sense of nostalgia, these shows are almost our ways to returning back to the things we used to or continue to like.

Lets find out the psychology behind it:

The Psychology Behind Rewatching Your Comfort Shows:

1. Familiarity Calms You

Work deadlines, social responsibilities and daily tasks often are overwhelming, so when you're done fulfilling your things for the day, you seek comfort and want your mind to relax. You may feel like starting a new show, but then you may also find yourself returning to the one before, because it feels more easy and does not require much effort.

Unlike a new thriller that keeps you hooked about what happens next, comfort tv shows allow you to relax by not putting in too much energy into understanding what's going on.

2. Love For Nostalgia

Some plots just really feel connected to use. This can also happen with some of our favourite characters. For example, people just simply love watching Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory or just want to go for a New York ride by watching Serena and Blair from Gossip Girl.

So it is not always what is being presented but the emotions that are linked with it.
Nostalgia can provide feelings of:

Happiness
Joy
Comfort
Belonging
Emotional Connection.

3. These Shows Feel Like Revisiting Old Friends

Watching your favourite shows can feel like you're connected to your old friends, who never change, never judge and are just there for you. This emotional familiarity is perhaps one of the reasons why people feel so connected to these shows.

Is Rewatching Tv Shows Healthy?

In Moderation, Why not?

However, like any other coping mechanism, balance is most certainly important. When enjoyed mindfully, these shows can be relaxing but again, do not let the same thing get a toll over your mind. Everything in moderation with balance just works fine.
